In his new book Drug Use for Grown-Ups, Dr Carl Hart draws on decades of research and his own personal experience to argue definitively that the criminalization and demonization of drug use—not drugs themselves—have been a tremendous scourge on America, not least in reinforcing enduring structural racism.

Carl Hart is Ziff Professor of Psychology (in Psychiatry) at Columbia University and is former chair of Columbia’s Department of Psychology.

Kasia Malinowska is director of the Open Society Global Drug Policy Program.
